Odyssey of the Mind Photo.jpg

The Kenowa Hills Oydessy of the Mind team competed in the World Finals at Michigan State University. Their topic was Return to the Gift of Flight. They did a tremendous job with a very challenging assignment. “They had to design a series of aircrafts that had to complete a variety of challenging tasks with a creative air traffic controller who had to keep the flights in order during the team performance.” Their presentation was incredible. We are very proud of the team. Thank you to the coaches , parents and the community sponsors.

Algebra 1A:

If your 8th grade student completed Algebra IA, he/she has started his/her high school GPA. If he/she is satisfied with the grades earned as an 8th grader in this class, they would choose to move on to Algebra IB as a freshman. He/She may need to take the class again either to improve their grade or earn the credit. If your student received a failing grade in either semester of Algebra IA, the entire class will need to be re-taken.

Note: If summer school is not taken advantage of, the student will be automatically enrolled in full paced Algebra I at the high school. This is a faster paced class that moves through the entire Algebra curriculum in just one year, as opposed to two years as Algebra IA and Algebra IB.

Due to the uncertainty of what the upcoming flu season may bring, we want to remind you of some important basic safety measures that we are following as recommended by the CDC to prevent all children from contracting common viruses or the H1NI (swine flu).  Reminding your children to take simple measures like washing hands, covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth, and staying home when they are sick are all great ways to prevent unnecessary illness.

KHPS now uses the Honeywell Instant Alert system as a primary way to communicate information to families. The instant alert system will notify families of school closings, event times, schedule changes, conferences, and much more. The system sends a single clear message to students’ parents or guardians by telephone, cell phone or email in any combination!

Instant Alert is internet based, allowing each family to maintain a secure, password protected online profile. The instant alert system offers families 5 different alert categories to choose from:

  1. School Closings/Delays
  2. High Importance (urgent messages)
  3. Transportation (i.e. bus delays due to traffic or weather)
  4. Building Events (i.e. teacher conferences, field trip reminders)
  5. District Announcements (i.e. Community Events, Student Count Day and election reminders).

Each family must UPDATE THEIR PROFILE in order to receive accurate instant alerts. By creating a profile users will be able to select which type of information they would like to receive on each of contact device (i.e. email, cell phone, etc.). Currently, only staff or families with students enrolled in KHPS can create a profile. In mid-January instructions on how to access the system were mailed to families with students enrolled in KHPS. If you have a child enrolled in KHPS and did not receive instructions, please contact your child's school office.

On Tuesday, January 26, our 7th & 8th grade students will be
hearing Tova Fridman, a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp
share her story. A book, DVD or combo will be available for
students to purchase for $34.95. The general public can hear Tova
speak on Friday, January 28 at 2:00 at the Civic Theater in downtown
Grand Rapids.

The Middle School Student Council and Staff Help Families In Need

This year as a holiday fundraiser, the Middle School Student Council worked with the Walker Police Department to collect items for their annual food drive. The students chose this fundraiser because it directly helps families living in our area. As a result of their hard efforts, Kenowa Hills Middle School staff and students donated 795 food items. Everyone was very excited with the successful outcome and are very proud to have helped families in need.

Kenowa Hills High School Student Services Office has begun planning for next year. Our preparation for incoming freshmen will begin on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. On that day we will host two presentations for parents and students to discuss the scheduling process. The 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. presentations will focus a great deal on working with incoming freshmen. To avoid an absence from school, we recommend that students attend the evening meeting with their parents.
