"What a great way to learn about history!" exclaimed Alpine Elementary third graders from Mrs. Hartley's and Mrs. Kimble's classes. On October 16, all Kenowa Hills third graders participated in a Michigan Outdoor Adventure Day at Hiedi's Farmstand in Lowell.
They saw Michigan history come alive as they visited an Ottawa Native American village and French fur trading post. They they also walked through a corn maze and explored pioneer farming. Students visited Grandma's trunk where they learned first hand about daily chores for a pioneer family.
Everyone really enjoyed tasting and comparing a variety of Michigan apples. The doughnuts and cider were delicious too! It was a fun day of learning for all!

Kenowa Hills bus drivers rolled out the red carpet for Alpine Elementary students - literally. During the bus safety presentation, the drivers place a red carpet around the bus. The carpet serves as a visual reminder of the safety zone around the bus. It is important for all our KHPS students to understand and practice bus safety. KHPS buses travel 4322 miles per day, and transport over 3000 students to and from school every day. Special thanks to all our KHPS bus drivers - we appreciate all you do!

Fourth grade students at Alpine Elementary are painting new "Super Heroes" in Mrs. Vanderhart's art class. In addition, third grade students are creating symmetrical tribal masks with oil pastel. There are many new pictures available to view in our ART GALLERY.
Mrs. Vanderhart commends all her students who are continuing to show effort and put forth their personal best. We are especially proud of Caleb Bessemer (third grader) who used perseverance to overcome his frustration while working with oil pastels to experience success.
Please check the Art Gallery regularly to view projects that are completed or in the process of being completed by our students. This is a great way to recognize the wonderful work being done and the talents of our students!

Third graders at Alpine Elementary went on a study trip to Hoffmaster State Park as a kickoff to our Michigan studies! Inside they explored a variety of exhibits to learn more about Michigan plants, animals, geography, and the Great Lakes. Outside they climbed to the top of the Lake Michigan overlook. The view was beautiful! Students also used magnets to observe what sand is made of, climbed a tall dune, and walked the Lake Michigan shoreline. They now truly understand how the dunes are a Michigan treasure and need to be protected. Pictured are students in Mrs. Hartley's class - everyone made it to the top of the dune climb! It was a day full of fun and learning for all!

Every year friends at Alpine Elementary come and go. Although it is difficult to say goodbye to those who leave us, it is exciting to welcome those who are new. This year, Alpine Elementary welcomes over seventy new friends to our school! Alpine Elementary students and staff work hard to help our new friends feel comfortable and safe and to learn the various procedures and rules of our school.

Students in Mrs. Guczwa's and Mrs. Fussmans's 4th grade class spent time the first week of school learning about the brain and how it works. Students used class time to learn about the basic needs of the brain, complete "brain stations", and dissect a sheep's brain. In addition, in order to show what they have learned, students worked as a cooperative team to demonstrate their knowledge through a group chosen project.

Congratulations Mrs. Adams!
In July, Mrs. Adams will become the Superintendent of Saranac Community Schools and will have officially left Kenowa Hills Public Schools. Jeanette has been with Kenowa Hills for the past 15 years. She has served KHPS as principal of Alpine Elementary and this past school year was principal of Fairview Elementary. She was also the Director of the Migrant and Bilingual Program. Although it will be difficult to lose Mrs. Adams - we are very proud of her success and wish her all the best in her Superintendency. Thank you for all your years of dedication! We will miss you!

On Wednesday, May 20, our Kindergarten classrooms visited John Ball Park Zoo. Each student picked an animal to study there. Over the weekend they will be completing a short project about their chosen animal. Students will have to find one fact about that animal and create an
illustration of it.
It was pretty hot while they were there, but they all had a great time!
This was a great study trip to give students a "being there" experience prior to doing their project. We are very excited to see their end products!

On Wednesday, May 6, Alpine Elementary had its second annual Walk-A-Thon.
This was a PTO sponsored event where students had the opportunity to raise pledge money (donations) to walk or run for thirty minutes around the school. Many students participated raising over $2000.00 for our school. Not only did students work to help our school, but they were able to receive some wonderful exercise on a sunny day.
At the end of each class's thirty minutes, students were able to enjoy a delicious healthy snack and a nice bottle of water provided by Remembrance Church. In addition, some students were able to win prizes for the amount of money they raised.

On Friday, May 1, Alpine Elementary held its first ever "Multi-Age Day". This day replaced V.I.P. Day at our school due to the stress V.I.P. Day often caused for our students who were unable to bring a V.I.P.. In addition, our teachers really wanted to focus the day on curriculum that needs to be taught and learned at each grade.
The day was a great success! Students were divided into multi-age classrooms with students from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade. Each grade level taught a different reading genre. First Grade taught fairy tales, Second Grade taught fables, Third Grade focused on informational text and fourth grade discussed mysteries. Each grade had books to read and interactive activities to engage all the learners. Students rotated four times so that they would be exposed to each type of reading genre presented. We had approximately twenty parent volunteers visit school to assist the students and teachers during each of the lessons.
At the end of the day, students had a greater knowledge of the reading genres and it was wonderful seeing the older students help the younger students. In addition, it helped students get to know other teachers within the building. Multi-Age Day helped to celebrate learning and our school community.

Our first grade celebrated their reading skills by presenting various reader's theatre plays. Students from Mrs. Bach's reading neighborhood read and acted out the stories of The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
The students created backgrounds as well as hats to make the play real and used their best voice during the reading.
Students in Mrs. Maxwell's and Mrs. Nicolette's reading neighborhoods enjoyed seeing their friends perform. This was a great activity to motivate students to read and for students to improve their fluency.

Thank you so much to everyone that chipped in to help with the Daddy Daughter Dance on Friday. The dads and daughters seemed to have a good time. We had somewhere around 50 "couples". This was a great evening to celebrate the many wonderful families we have here at Alpine Elementary. It was fun seeing the girls dance to their favorite songs and getting their "dates" out on the dance floor. Each "couple" was able to have a professional photograph taken to remember the evening. Fourth grade boys helped raise money for their fourth grade study trip to Binder Park Zoo by selling corsages.
Special thanks to:
Jason Snyder and Lauri Bach for their wonderful DJ skills, Wendy Maxwell for taking picture orders and making sure the photographer was taken care of, Diane Paprance and Brenda Elliot for being money takers and other tasks as assigned, Chuck Novak for hauling tables, Cathy Scott, Monica and Sloan McLean, and Kim Ross for helping with set-up and decorating, Lisa Lea for helping in the kitchen and with shopping, and all of the teachers that help us promote these events and let us use their room and equipment and all of the dads that stayed to help clean up.

Mrs. Blazak is our head kitchen staff employee.
Both of these special people truly make a difference in the lives of all our students at Alpine Elementary. Congratulations!
